Experience the Excitement of the Idaho Stampede

By Michael Strickland

"The game of basketball has been everything to me," wrote  Michael Jordan. "My place of refuge, place I've always gone where I needed comfort and peace. It's been the site of intense pain and the most intense feelings of joy and satisfaction."
I love the community feel surrounding Boise's NBA D- League Team. It brings me back to my days growing up in the east, watching legends from the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets. I first learned the term "Thread the needle pass" after my father identified an amazing throw that Eric "Sleepy" Floyd had just completed.
I remember sitting at courtside and marvelling at the sheer size of Darryl Dawkins, and how he effectively began the "Gorilla Dunk," a now common occurrence in the sport.
On the playgrounds of New York and New Jersey, shooting hoops was a social gathering that connected people at all levels. Stepping out one afternoon and seeing aspiring, future, and past NBA stars was a common occurrence.
I'll never forget those days.
After moving to Idaho eleven years ago, I sometimes wondered if, and how I would be able to share these precious slices of positive inner-city energy and culture, with my children.
So imagine my joy when I realized that, along with the staff and players of the Idaho Stampede; my experience can be re-created right here in Boise.
That is why this team has meaning for me.

NEWS: The #Twolves recall Tyus Jones from the NBA Development League's Idaho Stampede.
Posted by Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, December 22, 2015
Since 2005, the Stampede has played at the CenturyLink Arena in Boise. The team was founded as a member of the Continental Basketball Association in 1997 and was league runner-up in the 2003–04 season, losing to the Dakota Wizards. After the 2005–06 season, the Stampede announced that the team would be joining the NBA Development League.
The Stampede's sole NBA affiliate is the Utah Jazz, with whom they have a hybrid partnership. They also had past affiliations with the Denver Nuggets, Seattle SuperSonics, Toronto Raptors and most recently the Portland Trail Blazers with the Jazz taking sole affiliation after the 2013-2014 season. In the Stampede's first D-League season, the team won the Western Division title, tying for the best record in the league.
The inner-city playground courts that gave me so many defining and formative experiences of of my youth are 2,000 miles away. But I can thank the Idaho Stampede for helping me re-experience many slices of my wonderful, urban upbringing.

Kellen Moore's Big Test

Today's start on Dallas could make or break his image as a solid NFL quarterback.

Many have raised concerns that "the NFL is not college" and have cited the weaknesses in Boise State's schedule. It was against that list of teams that Moore went 50 - 3 and became college football's all-time winningest quarterback. But Moore also has throngs of supporters, especially in Boise:

One supporter on the CBS website wrote:

Moore's detractors either: 1. Don't know how tall Drew Brees and Russ Wilson are. 2. Haven't seen Moore play, or read his stats. 3. Haven't played against him. He did play entire preseason games for Detroit and, in his typical form, eviserated the Patroits' defense in one lopsided victory. One Detroit sportswriter called him, "The best QB the Lyons have." Number 4: He loves and lives the game, for the game itself.

Take a look at highlights of Moore from his first regular season game.

It appears the Dallas Cowboys are going with Kellen Moore for Week 16.
Posted by CBS Sports on Monday, December 21, 2015

It will be a challenging game for the former Boise State signal caller for reasons other than it being his first NFL start. "Moore will have to do without receiver Dez Bryant, who has been ruled out with foot and ankle injuries. Receiver Cole Beasley (knee) is questionable and tight end Jason Witten is playing with a chest/rib injury," according to Todd Archer of ESPN.

Uphill battle or not, it couldn't have happened on a more intriuging sqaud. Known simply as “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys are one of football’s most storied franchises and always begin each season with a legitimate chance to add another Super Bowl title to
their existing five. In If These Walls Could Talk: Dallas Cowboys: Stories from the Dallas Cowboys Sideline, Locker Room, and Press Box, author and Cowboys employee Nick Eatman, through interviews with current and past players, provides fans with a one-of-a-kind, insider’s look into the great moments and the lowlights throughout the team’s history.

Readers will hear from players, coaches, and management as they discuss their moments of greatness as well as their defeats, making If These Walls Could Talk: Dallas Cowboys a keepsake no fan will want to miss.

Stay tuned to this blog for updates about Kellen Moore's big day.

This came though her entire experience and participating in her two favorite parts of the pageant, the talent and interview sections. Coastal Carolina head coach (and TD AMERITRADE chairman) Joe Moglia Shows a Unique Path To Success

Coastal Carolina head coach (and TD AMERITRADE chairman) Joe Moglia has had an amazing two years. He took a promising, but underperforming, college football team, and turned them into repeat division champions in his first year as head coach. Before becoming the head coach at Coastal Carolina, Joe was the CEO and chairman of TD AMERITRADE, where he led the company from a market value of $700 million to $10 billion.
At the heart of his system is something he calls simply, "Be a Man."

I was delighted when AXS CEO Troy McClain brought up this fascinating leader during one of our discussions about Proven Success.

In the interview below, Joe describes exactly what the BAM philosophy is all about, and how others can achieve greater success in their own lives and careers.
Natalie Pace: What is your Be a Man philosophy all about?Joe Moglia: It's about standing on your own two feet and learning to take responsibility for yourself. It has nothing to do with gender. It has everything to do with being a great leader. A great leader has a respect for others and cares about other people in his or her charge.
NP: What are your BAM expectations of your team?JM: Everybody on our team is somebody's son or brother. We expect our guys, coaches as well, to live up to that responsibility to their family. Not just on the football field, but in the classroom, and your behavior on and off campus.
NP: It's one thing to say "BAM!" and another to turn a losing team into winners. How did you inspire that turnaround in just two years? Are they receiving extra help? Are you bringing in extra resources? JM: Remember: We did the same thing in the business world. It was the exact same philosophy. You have to implement a plan. You have to implement a strategy. You have to have a mission. Most people's mission in the business world is, "We want to be the best blah blah blah at whatever we do." At Ameritrade, our mission was that we were going to bring financial literacy to everybody in this country. It was aspirational. But it also wasn't about us. It was about our clients. Our mission at Coastal Carolina is that we're going to put a team on the field that anyone associated with Coastal is going to be proud of. While winning is an important part of that, it also means that you never, ever, ever take the play off. You always give it 100% of everything you have. This is not just football. This is in the classroom. We have incredible resources to help our athletes at Coastal. But if the guys are not even going to class, we don't want them to use those resources. They've got to go to class. They've got to live up to the responsibility and we'll do everything we can to help them.
NP: What other tricks are up your sleeve to help your players achieve greater heights on and off of the field?JM: There are three ways that anybody learns. It's not about how we teach things or explain things, it's about how they learn. You can learn kinesthetically, by touching and feeling. You can do it through audio and through visual. All of our guys, including our coaches, take tests, so we know what kind of learner he is. If you are a kinesthetic learner and the coach is explaining something to you that you don't quite understand, instead of saying, "Coach, could you explain that again," you say, "Coach, instead of just explaining that, would you mind showing me." In our meetings, our coaches have our players explain to the other players, and to the coaches, what their responsibility is and why in a particular call or a particular play.
NP: How does someone step up and take responsibility?JM: We talk about spiritual soundness. We talk about dedication. We talk about courage. We talk about love. The commitment to the well-being of others. Truly understanding that and getting that is what separates a good leader from a great leader. It helps a boy become a man. That's what helps a girl become a woman.
NP contnues: I just learned that as a kid, you were in a gang. Does your experience on the street give you more of a connection, and maybe even more respect, from the players?

Read the rest of this fascinating interview at

Thanks again to Troy McClain for bringing uo this fascinating topic. It deserves further exploration.

Ryan DeLuca Donated $10,000 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Idaho

Source: WikiCommons
It is always good to look at great examples of influential people who give back to their community. Ryan DeLuca built into one of Boise’s most successful startups, according to the Idaho Statesman.

"The company sells about 15,000 nutrition and weightlifting supplements online," the article says. "He sold a controlling interest to Liberty Media, the Colorado-based owner of the QVC home-cable network, for more than $100 million in 2008."

Having recently retired, DeLuca was, and is still an active force in our community. One example from August 2014 is shown by KTVB: CEO Ryan DeLuca had employees dump 100 buckets of ice water on him for the Ice Bucket Challenge. He's donating $100 per bucket to the fight against ALS and other neuromuscular diseases. He says ALS has directly affected the families of several staff members. DeLuca's $10,000 is staying local and going to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Idaho, the local sister organization of the ALS Association. has about 800 employees, including 600 in Boise. “He’s not only had a monumental impact on the city of Boise and the state of Idaho, but he has managed to literally transform the entire international fitness industry,” said Matt Rissell, CEO and co-founder of Eagle time sheet software company TSheets.

Jonathan Warren and The Billy Goats "Bless My Soul" Released ‪in ‎Boise‬ Fri. Nov. 13

by Michael Strickland

Boise's music scene continues to grow more exciting.

"Like a wandering mysterious traveller, Jonathan Warren & The Billy Goats don’t quite belong in country, or folk, nor alternative," writes Nanobot Rock Reviews,
"yet they spend their days smoothly passing through each, leaving an identifiable and memorable fusion of all.”

My eyes lit up when I read the news that "Bless My Soul," the latest album from Jonathan Warren and The Billy Goats, will be released at the Visual Arts Collective ‪in ‎Boise‬ Fri. Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.

Curtis  Sutton and The Scavengers will be special guests for support.

As we examine the country roots in them: "What makes a great country song?" says Rolling Stone Magazine. "It tells a story. It draws a line. It has a twang you can feel down to the soles of your feet. Some get mad, some get weepy, some just get you down the road."

This band plays those kinds of songs.

An article called "Jonathan Warren and the Billy Goats - Not Your Ordinary Backwoods Story," by Crandal Boudreaux, says:

If I were to tell you three things about Boise-based Americana band Jonathan Warren and the Billy Goats, you'd probably think I was simply tossing around some of the same old clich├ęs we often hear about country, folk, or bluegrass music. Consider: The band only exists because someone's dog died, because Mel Bay wrote some very useful guitar books, and because a local Western-themed buffet restaurant provides good food at a reasonable price. Sound like some familiar themes?
But life and music ain't that simple, as you find out when you scratch the veneer off this band's story, listen to their tunes, and see them at work. That's when you find that Mr. Warren and his Billy Goats are anything but ordinary, and that they've got an honest, soulful sound that is well beyond their years.
A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Jonathan Warren has an enviable beard, a dog named Cletus, and a predilection for "foot stompin' music that makes you want to eat a biscuit." There's nothing really unique about that, considering the description could fit a lot of folks in the part of the country where he grew up. But there's something different about this guy.

David Henry- vocals, cello, guitar

Boise Weekly said:

It took Jonathan Warren and the Billy Goats a full year to record their newest album, Bless My Soul. That's a drastic change in past recording timelines for the local folk/bluegrass band.
"Our last record, we recorded it in three days," said frontman Jonathan Warren. "Our first record, it took a few months. ... We used a more methodical approach [on Bless My Soul]. I had a vision for the album and stayed true to that vision. ... Less was left up to 'the moment.'"
The new album incorporates old-fashioned country-western complete with jovial piano keys and a rattling banjo, but stays true to the Billy Goats' raspy vocals and "psychobilly folk-grass."

Thank you for supporting local live music.: said Seth J Brown' of TO Entertain U, LLC.

Rhonda Byrne Makes Dreams Manifest through The Secret

"One of the most powerful uses of gratitude can be incorporated in the Creative Process to turbo-charge what you want," The Secret, p. 80.

Fragments of a Great Secret have been found in the oral traditions, in literature, in religions and philosophies throughout the centuries.

That is why it is one of my favorite books, says AXS CEO Troy McClain. I look at McClian's endorsement of the work as a key, since I respect his opinion on so many things.

I have found the The Secret to be very revealing. many of its truths are taken from widely available sources. But in today's media clutter, there is something about this book that puts them together in a way that pulls the secrets of health, wealth and happiness out from the fog.

Just what is this phenomenon?

The Secret is a best-selling 2006 self-help book written by Rhonda Byrne, based on the earlier film of the same name. It is based on the law of attraction and claims that positive thinking can create life-changing results such as increased happiness, health, and wealth.

The book has sold more than 19 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 46 languages. The book begins by introducing and explaining the mechanisms of the law of attraction, and then describes historical examples of its application and great men and women in history who are claimed to have harnessed its power.

I have heard so much about this work over the years. That is why it was delightful when it was mentioned as a resource at a recent training with Troy and others, including Brett Labit and David Cohen.

The book describes the law as accounting for a magnetic power that is emitted through one's thoughts. The power of thoughts is likened to the power in a transmission tower, which sends out a frequency to the universe and then returns the same frequency in a physical or elemental form.

This reminds me of what Nicola Tesla said; “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”

"And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive." (Matthew 21:22)

Jennifer Levy Ignites the Boise Arts and Creative Scene

To love beauty is to see light,” wrote Victor Hugo. I have been fortunate to experience both the beauty and enduring light of one of Idaho’s top talents,  actress and model Jennifer Levy.

With so much talent around the Boise, Idaho arts and creative circles, it is lovely to see someone rise to the top and capture fans. Jennifer is igniting the scene!

Jennifer is classy, charming and fun. Look at her subtle, yet enticing smile. Now examine that healthy and lustrous hair. Her proportions are smooth, inviting and make her persona seem to call your name.

It's now wonder that Jennifer is so popular.

As you can imagine, Jennifer's resume is extensive. It includes work with Urban Talent Management (since 2006); Production crew with Clear As Mudd Films; Pre-Production crew with Rising Phoenix Studios; Calendar girl for Cruisn’ Biker wear 2015 & 2016 and 96.9 Eagle Rock girl 2015.

“MSG for bookings. I travel!” says this energetic star on her Facebook page.

I asked Jennifer to tell celebritiesandstars more about her work: “I was able to be a body double for Carbon, a short film, (Christian Lybrook) that won the short script competition last year at the Sun Valley film fest,” Jennifer said. “It will be showing there in March. We are also going to have the feature movie, The Bullet (Clear As Mudd Films, Matt Mudd) submitted for the Sun Valley festival in March too.”

This rising star was also director of photography, producer and played "Chloe" in the upcoming zombie film Project Fourteen from Clear As Mudd Films. Jennifer was the producer and played "Jo" in The Bullet. She has 4 credits now on imdb and is part of the pre-production crew for Rising Phoenix Studios.

Jennifer has the poise and features of a runway model, the intelligence to be a great actress, the warmth to be a friend, and the confidence to be an ambassador to her community.

Special thanks go to Amanda Woods of Woods on Fire Innovative Beauty, Lenny Wheeler of Lenny Wheeler Photography ... for their classic work that helped create this miracle. "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever: Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness," wrote John Keats in Endymion. Jennifer Levy is here to stay.

A great model will have something about them that no other model has. This quality is often described as a “unique flair.”
